About the National Examinations

The Rigby Reads and Iowa Mathematics Assessment will now be referred to as The BAHAMAS LITERACY AND NUMERACY ASSESSMENTS. The examination will be administered to all students during the period 7th – 11th May, 2012.
There is no special preparation required for students taking the assessments. These are diagnostic tools; therefore the results should be used to guide the instruction of these students in the subsequent year.
It is anticipated that the Literacy Assessment will have added components of LISTENING COMPREHENSION and WRITING SKILLS which will be closely aligned to the Curriculum Objectives for the stated grades. Students will be required to demonstrate proficiency in these areas as well as READING COMPREHENSION.
Reading fluency levels will also be assessed during this cycle. For this component of the Literacy Assessment each student will be required to read orally to the class teacher for one minute. The teacher will subtract the number of words read incorrectly from the total words read to obtain the fluency rate.
The Numeracy Assessment will cover the broad areas of Math Concepts, Computation and Problem Solving and the individual sub-skills will remain as is, but like the Literacy, will be closely aligned to the grades 2, 4, and 5 Curriculum Objectives.
Schools must complete an Information Summary Sheet and register for each of the classes participating in these assessments. The Information Summary Sheet and registers should be returned to the Assessment Unit by Monday, January 9th, 2012.
