Message from ACURIL President 2013-2014

Greetings to Colleagues and Friends,

It is my profound pleasure to invite you to The Bahamas on this special occasion of the 44th Annual Conference of ACURIL scheduled to be held from June 8th to 12th 2014 at the new Melia` Nassau Beach Hotel under the theme “ Libraries, Archives and Museums: Gateways to Information Literacy and Cultural Heritage”. It is a fitting theme as it speaks to current issues and coincides with our Prime Minister’s declaration of 2014 as the ‘Year of Culture’ in Commonwealth of The Bahamas.

This past year, the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization endorsed the International Literacy Communities mission “Literacies for the 21st Century” suggesting the pertinent role all types of literacies play in the lives of persons living in society.

More and more we realize that in order to function effectively in a technological world, we must garner information literacy skills and preserve our cultural heritage.

Venue - Bahamas, The
Melia Nassau Beach Hotel

The bridge to these two goals is found in well-established and democratic institutions such as libraries, archives and museums. They are still relevant and therefore gateways to the future holding the keys to success of our youth in the region and around the world.

This conference gives each one of us an opportunity to celebrate our cultural icons, reflect on our rich culture and special interest in regattas. One of the first sailboats used in this national sport, started over sixty years ago, is depicted in our conference logo. In addition, it is a privilege to collaborate in partnerships with time tested institutions, educators and information professionals in the region and internationally.

Our focus is to promote and foster critical thinking skills and perpetuate a culture that will allow persons to make well-informed decisions in their careers and aspirations in pursuit of lifelong learning and fulfilment. May you enjoy each moment and be enriched by this multicultural experience.

Warmest regards,

Dorcas R. Bowler, B.Ed.,MLIS, CPLA
