Naomi 'Virgie' Lightbourn Comunity Public Library
History
The library was named after Naomi Lightbourne, a teacher who gave 41 years of her life to the education of Sandy Point’s children. The library is the dream of a local library committee headed by Ms Diana Fox. The building housing the library has two rooms and was formerly the local clinic. The renovation of the building started in 2012 and was made possible through donations from the town committee, the Member of Parliament for South Abaco, and the general public. Other individuals and companies donated computers and boxes of books.
The library was dedicated on October 4, 2013. It was open during the summer of 2014 to provide a wholesome activity for the children of the settlement. The official Grand opening ceremony took place on October 17, 2014. Mrs Lightbourn was presented with a plaque of appreciation. Speakers bringing remarks included Pastor Erskine Wells Jr., Leslie Rolle of the Ministry of Education, and Preston Cunningham, Senior Island Administrator.
